Une scène d’automne, 2017
photograph of painted objects
This project was inspired by the work of Alexa Meade who was introduced to me in my high school art class. In continuity with my interest in creating spaces with distinct moods, I designed a cozy and comforting atmosphere with five different objects which I painted a palette of warm colors - at first simply because I am most appealed by that range of colors, but also because it reinforced the “coziness” and intimacy of the scene. The various shades of blue used for the background serve as a contrast, to make the objects stand out even more. Meade’s technique purposefully emphasizes shadows and gradients, to make three dimensional things appear two dimensional like a painting. Her works thus look like paintings but are in fact humans or objects painted and then photographed. The moment you realize her pieces are not traditional canvas paintings is quite amusing and bewildering.
